As water we may use on the Earth is limitedwe need to return water from nature back to nature. While we farm. breed livestock animals. make products, and wash ourselveswater is thrown out and decayed.

If this contaminated water flows into rivers directlythe aquatic ecosystem will be destroyed, incurring environmental pollution and dirty water will eventually comeback to us.

To purify thrown waterto keep nature, and to keep the healthy futurethe Seoul City is operating four sewage treatment centers.

Among themthe Jungnang Sewage Treatment Center for the northeastern region of Seoul treats about 1.59 million tons of water per day on average.

Especially through the facility modernization to have sewage treatment process underground, the Jungnang Sewage Treatment Center is recognized as the representative sewage treatment center of Korea.

In 1976, the Cheonggye Sewage Treatment Plant, the Korea’s first sewage treatment plant, was constructed. The Cheonggye Sewage Treatment Center, the former of Jungnang Sewage Treatment Center, was established to treat about 150k tons per day to protect water quality of Hangang River, the water source, and to improve hygienic environment of citizens.

Thereafter, the Jungnang Sewage Treatment Center has been operated for a long time to make great strides, and now it is treating domestic sewage from 10 districts of the Seoul City and some regions of Gyeonggi-do Province and night-soil and septic tanks from 14 districts of the Seoul City.

Located at 3-gil Car Market, Seongdong-gu, Seoul, the Jungnang Sewage Treatment Center is 801500-m2 wide. once contaminated sewage is collected at the Jungnang Sewage Treatment Center through drain pipes within drain areas, the sewage treatment equivalent to the circulation process of nature will be conducted.

Used water flowing into the sewage treatment center first gathers in the grit chamber, and waste, sand, and other heavy particles in sewage are removed at the grit chamber.

Thereafter, water moves into the primary settling basin, and water is settled for a certain time at the primary settling basin for separation of floating materials and sinking materials.

At last, the biological reactor is used to conduct the important process of removing pollutant with in sewage by using micro organisms bred.

Here, a chunk of microorganisms called floc is created, and this floc is separated from water at the secondary final settling basin to be sunk.

After this process, water goes through very thorough sterilization process to become clean water to be discharged.

As people’s demands about stream water quality are getting higher, the advanced treatment technique to prevent eutrophication by removing nitrogen and phosphorus has been applied to four sewage treatment centers in Seoul.

By the way, the residues from sewage treatment process are sent to the sludge treatment facility. To minimize the volume of sludge, sludge is concentrated, and the digestive process to decompose organic substances and to produce methane gas fuel and the dehydration process to remove moisture are conducted. Thereafter, it is dried to be regenerated as fuel for a thermo-electric power plant.

Jungnang Sewage Treatment Center has taken another leap. We have installed the sewage treatment process, which took a wide area on ground for a long time, underground and applied new technologies to reduce the facility area and improved the quality of discharging water, implementing the modernization of facilities.

Sewage flowing into the sewage treatment center passes through screening facilities, settling basins, and underground drain pipes to get into the modernized facilities. After passing the flow control tank, sewage goes through the high-ratefiltration of the primary treatment facility for removal of floating materials.

At the nitrification/denitrification tank using biofilm filtration, media and microorganisms around media remove nitrogen, and sewage goes through the nitrification tank and the total phosphorus treatment facility to remove remaining nitrogen and phosphorus. Finally, water after sterilization process becomes clean water to be discharged.

Well, let us take a look at more details about graded steps of facility modernization to regenerate 250k tons of water per day.

Contaminated water from grit chambers and inlet pumping stations goes to underground toward the treatment process. Hereif there is too much sewage inflow, sewage is stored in the flow control tank, and if there is not enough flow, the pump maintains the amount of sewage treatment.

This is the primary treatment facility. Here, water passes very quickly to remove floating materials, and this high-rate filtration may remove floating materials effectively with a small area. Moreover, it is helpful for propagation and treatment of microorganisms at the nitrification/denitrification tanks thereafter.

Water after the primary treatment facility goes into the denitrificationtank, an anaerobic zone.

Organic nitrogen compounds included in sewage water became nitrogen gas by microorganisms without oxygen, and the denitrification tank consumes remaining oxygen within nitrification solution to let nitrogen to fly away for denitrification.

Denitrified water goes into the upper section, the nitrification tank, and there is an aerator for air injection.

Due to microorganisms with biofilmsnitrification process of

combining organic nitrogen and ammonia nitrogen with oxygen begins.

Likewise, water filtered with upward current is discharged has less odor.

To remove residue within the process of restricting excess growth of microorganisms and eliminating floating materials, backwash is performed regularly.

Opposite to biological filtration, sewage water flows downward as backwash water.

Water after nitrification/denitrification processes flows into the nitrification tank through the returning pumping station for another nitrification process and removal of remaining organic substances. Thereafter, water flows into the total phosphorus treatment facility.

The total phosphorus treatment facility is a step to remove remaining phosphorus in sewage water more thoroughly, and chemicals are used to condense phosphorus melted in water.

Thereafter, this condensed phosphorus creates a floc chunk, and the filtration with fiber disk filter may remove this phosphorus more thoroughly.

Clean water after sewage treatment is sterilized at the end, and the ultraviolet light is used to kill e. coli. Water after sterilization is discharged to Jungnangcheon Stream.

As the treatment facility is located underground, if there is too much flow from heavy rain, there may be a case where discharging is not easy. Here at, we use the discharging pump to discharge sewage water smoothly when the water level of Jungnangcheon Stream rises. In general, if there is no rain, we lead spontaneous discharge to save the operating cost.

The Jungnang Sewage Treatment Center located underground has the initial run out treatment facility.

Since the contamination level is high in the beginning, the run out may contaminate stream if flown into a stream. To prevent this, the initial runout treatment facility uses chemicals and metal filtration to remove pollutants. This facility may take about 500k tons per day.

Backwash water to clean media from primary treatment, nitrification and denitrification tanks, and biological filtration is collected at the retaining tank and sent to the recycle water treatment facility. Here, solid residues are transferred to the sludge treatment facilityand water is sent back to the primary treatment facility. The inclination plate settling

basin supports easy settling of condensed residues and reduces the lot area as well.

Pride of the Jungnang Sewage Treatment Centerthe Reusing Water Treatment Facility. About 500 tons of water discharged after total phosphorus treatment is purified per day for the use of water for restroom, landscape water, and cleaning water without e. coli.

Clean water after reusing water treatment is available in various places of the Jungnang Sewage Treatment Center.

Through automation, the Jungnang Sewage Treatment Center effectively controls water treatment process and checks water quality frequently to manage it at the automatic control program operation room.

Moreover, there are deodorization facility to remove odor and other various ventilation facilities for fresh underground environment.

Faster, more compactand more effective water regeneration is per formed at the underground level of Jungnang Sewage Treatment Center.

Water from Jungnang Sewage Treatment Center invigorates reuse of water for advanced treatment of sewage and provides cleaner environment for citizens using streams.

Especially, since the sewage treatment is performed underground, the ground-level space is used for resident-friendly facilities. You may see the Water Circulation Theme Park to explain and experience water circulation, the Sewage Science Museum featuring Cheonggyecheon Stream and Jungnangcheon Streamand Eco-friendly Park harmonizing with nature of the Sewage Treatment Center.

For convenience of citizens, pedestrian passages within the center and bicycle roads from Jungnangcheon Stream to Cheonggyecheon Stream are connected for more accessibility. The spaces for sports have been also disclosed for better health of citizens.

Likewise, the Jungnang Sewage Treatment Center is regarded as the Water Island in Downtown for everyone to enjoy restplaylesson, and exercise.

No more unwanted public facilities but the favorable complex cultural spaces beloved by residents. The Jungnang Sewage Treatment Center is promoting the reinforcement of external competitiveness of domestic water industry at the regularization of global competition of water industries.

Development along with nature, Harmony and coexistence in nature History of regenerable and sustainable water circulation by the Jungnang Sewage Treatment Center.
