In GENESIS, God is repelled by the “wickedness of humankind," and the “evil inclination" of their hearts (Genesis 6:5). So the Lord resolves to wipe out humanity with a massive flood, but he does not wish to kill everyone. only a man called Noah and his family are.to be saved. God gives Noah detailed instructions to build an ark(literally, a “chest") that will rise upon the flood waters. Since the Genesis description does not refer to rudder or sails, this ark was apparently a boat without any means of navigation.

Nevertheless, Noah had to build the ark large enough to accommodate a “male and female" of every kind of living being (Genesis6:19).

The Bible story of the great Flood bears a strong similarity to events in Sumerian and Babylonian myths. one such myth is called the Epic of Atrahas is and dates from the second millennium B.C.E. According to this epic, man was molded from clay by a goddess named Mami.

When the humans became too noisy for the gods to bear, the earth and air god, Enlil, resolved to destroy mankind with a great flood. Fortunately, the hero of this story, a man named Atrahasis, is forewarned by the god Enki, who orders him to build a boat and fill it with all of his possessions, as well as a stable of animals and birds.

Another version, preserved on a tablet found in the palace of King Ashurbanipal in Nineveh, relates the epic of the legendary warrior-king Gilgamesh and the immortal Utnapishtim.“ In those days," Utnapishtim say, “the world teemed, the people multiplied, the world bellowed like a wild bull." The gods decided to do away with these noisy, meddlesome humans. The god Ea, however, had vowed to protect Utnapishtim, and so Ea tells him to build a boat.“ These are the measurements of the barque as you shall build her," he says; “let her beam equal her length, let her deck be roofed like the vault that covers the abyss; then take up into the boat the seed of all living creatures." The verse shows similarities to the instructions Noah receives in Genesis: “Make yourself an ark of cypress wood;... This is how you are to make it: the length of the ark three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. Make a roof for the ark, and finish it to a cubit above;... And of every living thing, of all flesh, you shall bring two of ever ykind"(Genesis6:14-19).

What these and other stories suggest is that the oral tradition of Genesis was very

familiar with and possibly nformed by the myths of ancient Mesopotamia.

Found in the Monastery of Kykkos, located in the highlands of Cyprus, this 12th-century mosaic(above)showsNoah’s ark and the great Flood.
