The Gettysburg Address by Abraham Lincoln

 

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

 

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

 

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow -- this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract.

 

The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.

 

It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

지금부터 87년 전 우리 조상들은 이 신대륙에 자유를 신봉하고, 또 모든 인간은 평등하게 창조되었다는 신조에 헌신하는 새 국민을 탄생시켰습니다.

지금 우리는 그렇게 신봉하고 그렇게 헌신하는 그 국민이 또는 어떤 국민이 오랫동안 지탱할 수 있는가를 시험하는 큰 내전을 치르고 있습니다. 우리는 그 전쟁의 대격전지에 모였습니다. 우리는 이 전쟁터의 일부를, 이 국민이 살 수 있도록 이곳에서 목숨을 바친 분들을 위한 마지막 안식처로 바치기 위해 이곳에 왔습니다. 우리가 그렇게 한다는 것을 지극히 타당하고 당연한 일입니다.

 

그러나 좀더 큰 의미에서는 우리는 이 땅을 헌납할 수도, 신성화할 수도, 성역 화할 수도 없습니다. 이곳에서 싸운 살아있는 분과 전사한 분들이 우리가 더하고 덜할 수 있는 미약한 힘을 훨씬 초월해서 이 땅을 성역화해 놓았기 때문입니다. 우리가 여기에서 하는 말은 세상 사람들은 별로 주의하지도 않을 것이며, 오랫동안 기억하지도 않을 것이나 그 분들이 이곳에서 한 일은 잊지 못할 것입니다. 이곳에서 싸운 분들이 이만큼 숭고하게 성취해 놓은, 아직 끝맺지 못한 일들을 위해 살아 있는 우리들은 헌신해야 합니다. 이곳에 모인 우리들은 우리 앞에 남아 있는 위대한 과업에 헌신해야 합니다. 이 명예로운 죽음 때문에 우리는 그분들이 마지막 헌신을 다한 그 대의에 더한층 헌신하게 되며, 이곳에 모인 우리들은 그분들의 죽음이 헛되지 않도록 숭고하게 결의하며, 이 국민이 하나님의 가호아래 새로운 자유를 탄생시키며, 국민의, 국민에 의한, 국민을 위한 정치가 지상에서 사라지지 않도록 합시다.
