On the Road to Emmaus

 

Two of Jesus' former companions were walking toward the village of Emmaus, discussing the tremendous events of the past days. As they went along, Jesus himself joined them, but neither man recognized him. "Why do you look so sad?" he asked them.

 

One of the two, Cleopas, gravely replied, "Where have you come from? Is it possible you have not heard the news?"

"What do you mean?" asked Jesus.

"We are sad because the great prophet, Jesus of Nazareth, has been crucified. We had believed him to be the saviour of our country, but when he died, all our hopes of salvation died with him."

"But do you not understand," said Jesus, "that Christ had to suffer first before he could be glorified?" And he explained what the prophets had foretold.

 

As they came near the village, the two companions persuaded him to stay the night and to eat with them. As they sat at the table, Jesus broke the bread, blessed it, and gave some to his companions. As he did so, suddenly their eyes were opened and the friends knew who he was, but at the same moment that they recognized him, Jesus disappeared from their sight. The two men were amazed, and asked each other, "Did you not feel something wonderful when he was walking with us on the road, when he explained what the prophets had foretold?" They lost no time in hurrying back to Jerusalem to tell the disciples that they had seen their Lord.

 

As they were speaking, Jesus again came among them. "Peace be with you," he said. The disciples were terrified, convinced that they saw a ghost. "Why are you frightened?" Jesus asked them. "I am no ghost. Come, touch me. Look at me. Feel the wounds on my hands and feet. Ghosts do not have flesh and bones, as I have." Then he asked them for food, and they gave him some grilled fish, which he ate in front of them.

 

One of the disciples, Thomas, was not present on this occasion, but he was told later what had happened. He could not believe that it was the Lord whom the others had seen.

 

"Unless I can feel for myself the wounds on his body I cannot accept that this man is Christ," he said.   A week later the disciples were together, Thomas with them, when Jesus entered.  "Thomas," said Jesus, "put your fingers on my side, touch the holes in my hands. Stop doubting and believe."

 

예수의 예전 동료 두 사람이 엠마오 마을을 향해 걸어가면서 지난날 에 일어난 엄청난 사건들에 대해 이야기하고 있었습니다. 그들이 갈 때에 예수께서도 그들과 합류하셨으나 아무도 그분을 알아보지 못하였다. "왜 그렇게 슬퍼 보이나요?" 예수님은 그들에게 물었다.

 

그들 중 한 사람인 클레오파스는 "당신은 어디서 오셨습니까? 그 소식(십자가에서 죽음) 을 듣지 못했을 수도 있습니까?" 라고 진지하게 대답했습니다.

 

예수께서 "무슨 뜻이에요?"라고 물으셨습니다. "위대한 선지자 나사렛 예수께서 십자가에 못 박혀 죽으셨기 때문에 우리는 슬품니다. 우리는 예수님이 우리나라의 구세주라고 믿었지만, 예수님이 돌아가시자 우리의 구원에 대한 모든 희망도 그와 함께 사라졌습니다."

 

예수께서는 “그리스도께서 영광을 받으시려면 먼저 고난을 받아야 한다는 것을 이해하지 못합니까?”라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그리고 선지자들이 예언한 것을 설명하셨습니다.

 

마을에 가까이 왔을 때, 두 동료는 그에게 하룻밤을 묵고 함께 식사하자고 설득했습니다. 그들이 식탁에 앉았을 때, 예수께서는 빵을 떼어 축복하신 다음 일행들에게 나누어 주셨습니다.

 

그러자 갑자기 그들의 눈이 열려서 친구들이 그분이 누구신지 알았으나, 그들이 그분인 것을 알아보는 순간, 예수께서는 그들에게서 사라지셨습니다. 두 사람이 놀라서 서로 물었다. "그분께서 우리와 함께 길을 가실 때, 예언자들이 예언한 것을 설명하실 때, 여러분은 놀라운 일을 느끼지 못하였습니까?"

 

그들은 지체하지 않고 서둘러 예루살렘으로 돌아가 제자들에게 주님을 보았다고 말했습니다.

그들이 말하고 있을 때, 예수께서 다시 그들 가운데로 오셨다. "평화가 너희와 함께 있기를"이라고 그는 말했다.

 

제자들은 유령을 본 줄 알고 겁에 질렸습니다. "왜 겁을 먹나요?" 예수께서는 그들에게 물으셨습니다. "나는 유령이 아니다. 와서 나를 만져라. 나를 보라. 내 손과 발의 상처를 만져보라. 유령은 나처럼 살과 뼈가 없다." 이에 그가 그들에게 먹을 것을 달라고 하니 그들이 구운 생선을 주었더니 그가 그들 앞에서 잡수시더라.

 

이때 제자 중 한 사람인 도마는 그 자리에 없었지만 나중에 무슨 일이 일어났는지를 듣게 되었습니다. 그는 다른 사람들이 본 분이 주님이라는 것을 믿을 수 없었습니다.

 

“내가 그의 몸에 난 상처를 직접 느낄 수 없다면 나는 이 사람이 그리스도라는 것을 받아들일 수 없습니다.”라고 도마는 말했습니다.

 

일주일 뒤에 예수께서 들어가실 때 제자들과 도마도 함께 모여 있었다. 예수께서 말씀하셨다. “도마야, 네 손가락을 내 옆구리와  내 손에 있는 자국을 만져 보아라. 더 이상 의심하지 말고 믿으라.

 

엠마오의  정확한 위치를 아는 사람은  아무도 없지만 어떤 사람들은 예루살렘에서 서쪽으로 약 30Km 떨이진곳에 암와스(Amwas) 마을에 있었다고  생각하며 에마오라는 이름은 따뜻한 우물이란 뜻이랍니다.
