Chuseok/ or Harvest Moon Festival

One of Korea's major holidays, the Harvest Moon Festival falls on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month. It a happy day because the harvest is over and there is plenty to eat and time to rest. The weather in general is more beautiful than at any other time of the year. Thus, it is a day for giving thanks to the gods and the ancestors. On Chuseok morning, the family gathers at the home of the oldest male to hold ancestral rites in the morning. After the ceremony, the food from the ritual table is shared by the family. Later the family visits the graves of ancestors to hold simple rites and to repair and clean up the graves.

 

According to historical records, Chuseok festivities originated in a month-long weaving competition between two teams held during the reign of King Yuri (r.24-57) of the Silla Kingdom. The king announced the winner on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, and the losing team provided food, drink, and entertainment for them. This festival was called Gabae/가베, which is perhaps the origin of the word Hangawi/한가위, another name for Chuseok. There are many customs related to the Harvest Moon Festival including making and eating songpyeon, steamed on pine needles, playing games such as tug of war and wrestling, and doing the circle dance ganggangsullae/강강술래.

 

 

추석 (한가위 / Harvest Moon Festival)

한국의 대표적인 명절 중 하나인 추석(또는 한가위)은 음력 8월 15일에 해당하는 날입니다.

 

이날은 수확이 끝난 뒤 풍성한 음식과 휴식이 함께하는 기쁜 날입니다.

대체로 이 시기의 날씨는 1년 중 가장 맑고 아름답기 때문에, 사람들은 신과 조상에게 감사의 마음을 드리는 날로 여깁니다.

 

추석 아침이 되면 가족들은 집안의 가장 연장자의 집에 모여 **차례(祖上祭禮)**를 지냅니다.

의식을 마친 뒤에는 제사상에 올렸던 음식을 가족이 함께 나누어 먹습니다.

 

그 후에는 조상들의 묘소를 찾아 성묘를 하고, 간단한 제사를 지내며 묘 주변을 정리하고 손질합니다.

 

역사적 기록에 따르면, 추석의 기원은 신라의 유리왕(재위 24–57) 시대로 거슬러 올라갑니다.

그 당시 왕은 두 팀을 나누어 한 달 동안 베짜기 대회를 열었는데, 음력 8월 15일에 승패를 결정했습니다.

 

진 팀은 이긴 팀에게 음식과 술, 그리고 놀이를 대접했다고 합니다. 이 축제는 ‘가배(嘉俳)’ 라고 불렸으며, 오늘날 추석의 또 다른 이름인 ‘한가위’ 라는 단어의 어원이 되었다고 전해집니다.

 

추석과 관련된 풍습으로는 솔잎 위에 찐 반달 모양의 송편을 만들어 먹는 일, 줄다리기·씨름 같은 민속놀이, 그리고 보름달 아래에서 손을 잡고 원을 그리며 춤추는 강강술래 등이 있습니다.

두 손 모아 기도하려니

하늘보다 내 마음에 고운 달이 먼저 뜹니다
