New Year's Day

On the first day of the new year, Koreans officially celebrate New Year's Day. All the people including the government, public, and private institutions celebrate New Year's Day, the first holiday of the year. People exchange New Year's greetings, oral or written, seeing the old year out and the new year in.

 

Traditional customs on New Year's Day called Seolnal  are quite unique. On the day, the extended family gathers at the home of the most senior male member. Dressed in new clothes, called seolbim, they hold formal rites called charye/ to honour and give thanks to their ancestors.

 

Afterwards, the family eats the food from the ritual table as well as a bowl of tteokguk, rice cake soup. Eating tteokguk is a sign that one has become one year older. When the meal is finished, younger members of the family perform formal bows called sebae to older members. Children are given gifts of newly minted money called sebaetdon after making their bows.

 

새해 첫날
새해의 첫날, 한국인들은 공식적으로 새해를 축하합니다. 정부, 공공기관, 사기업을 포함한 모든 사람들이 새해 첫 공휴일인 새해를 기념합니다. 사람들은 지난 한 해를 보내고 새해를 맞으며 구두나 서면으로 새해 인사를 나눕니다.

 

새해의 전통 풍습인 설날은 매우 독특합니다. 설날에는 대가족이 집안의 최고 어른의 집에 모입니다. 새 옷인 설빔을 차려입고, 조상님을 기리고 감사의 마음을 전하는 차례라는 의식을 거행합니다.

이후, 가족들은 제사상에 올렸던 음식을 먹고 떡국 한 그릇을 먹습니다. 떡국을 먹는 것은 한 살 더 먹었음을 상징합니다. 식사가 끝나면 어린 가족 구성원들은 어른들에게 세배라는 정중한 절을 합니다. 세배를 마친 후, 어린이들은 세뱃돈이라는 새로 발행된 돈을 선물로 받습니다.
